Under the management of two professional and highly innovative young chefs, and friends since college days, Carlos and Julio bring culinary art to Menorca. Both qualified as master chefs in Barcelona and gained 15 years experience on and off the island before fulfilling their dream to embark on their own project, Aroma Sensations. Their vision is to awaken all five senses by using the best Menorcan produce and reviving traditional flavours utilising new culinary techniques.
The first floor tapas bar oozes Mediterranean sophistication in every respect, from the white washed walls, chic tables and chairs and contemporary sofas to the art works made from local stone that appear to have been eroded by the wind into abstract shapes that play with the mind. The highlight, of course, has to be the imaginative tapas menu served with an interesting twist that’s guaranteed get your taste buds tingling, completing the sensory explosion of sight, sound, touch, smell and taste that combine to create the unique Aroma Sensations.
Forget traditional tapas, these are new generation tapas where contemplating the choice of exciting and original options is a pleasure in itself. For such intensity of flavour and attention to presentation detail, the menu is very competitively priced, starting at €0.80 for the gorgonzola, pear and macadamia nut croquettes to €9.80 for the scallop with Iberico ham, fresh shoots and sweet potato purée. Not to ruin the gastronomic surprise that is Aroma Sensations, here is just an idea of what is currently on the summer 2012 tapas menu.
Prawn sticks with green mojo (Canary Island herb dressing); Stone grilled tuna tataki with apple & camomile; Red Bull chicken with a BBQ pipette; Grilled foie gras with dashi soup & fresh blueberries; Summer vegetable salad, octopus & fresh herbs; Ox tail with Jerusalem artichoke & persimmon jelly; Coconut liquorice lamb under a veil of roses served with lychees; Steamed lobster dumpling with its own stew.
Each night there are always three or four chef’s tapas of the day and also, for something very special, you can order the grilled menorcan prawns at €25 – a local delicacy with an exquisite flavour. To complete your tapas extravaganza, there are some ingenious sweet tapas, all priced at €3.50, including Sacher Torte Contrast with chilli chocolate ganache, dried fruit parfait & corn ‘poppers’ and Woodland Perfume with a roast chestnut base, rosemary egg yolk and woodland preserve. Prepare to be amazed…!
The carefully selected wine list complements the tapas menu perfectly with interesting choices of whites and reds from Menorca, Mallorca and mainland Spain as well as rosé wines, cavas and Champagnes. With Can Feixes white wine at €12, it is also well priced too. The cocktail menu includes Mojitos, Daiquiris and some inventive options unique to Aroma Sensations, a special Gin Tonic menu as well as some tempting non alcoholic cocktails.
As the evening progresses, so does the mood at Aroma Sensations. Early evening, the relaxed seating area is the perfect venue for leisurely cocktails whilesoaking up the boating atmosphere as the sun sets over the harbour. Later, the restaurant becomes a bustling tapas bar as people delight in discovering new taste sensations and are tempted to try just one more. Finally, into the early hours, Aroma Sensations provides a great stop off for a late night drink to round off a memorable evening.
The elegant restaurant on the floor above offers a different take on fine dining with a sensational Menú Degustación or gourmet tasting menu of either seven or eleven courses.
