Before implementing this pilot project, both the teachers and volunteers involved attended a short course on interactive groups at CEP de Menorca. These groups are an innovative way of working in the classroom that both enriches and enhances learning as well as contributes towards improving the quality of education and coexistence beyond the school. Based on conversational learning, this proactive initiative offers a widespread approach that allows boys and girls to learn effectively, using all the resources available to them while also encompassing the whole school community.
The task of the volunteers lies in speaking in English to the pupils while helping them withother activities such as arts and crafts, playing games, story telling, etc which have previously been prepared by the teacher and agreed with the volunteers.
This has been a very successful exercise. Teachers, volunteers, parents and the students themselves are delighted with the project and we have received very positive feedback from both teachers and volunteers. All the volunteers have expressed their intention to continue with the project and we hope we can encourage some more native English speaking residents as we would like to expand the initiative to other schools. We hope that in a few years time we can have all the schools involved as we really think it is a good way to improve the students linguistic competence in English and open the school to the British community.
This agreement between Menorca Britannia and CEP de Menorca has also brought about the twinning between British primary schools and Menorquian primary schools. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the participating teachers and specially the volunteers for their implication and enthusiasm.
The participating schools were: CEIP Angel Ruiz i Pablo in Es Castell; CEIP Mare de Déu del Carme, CEIP Antoni Juan Alemany, CEIP Mare de Déu de Gràcia, CEIP Tramuntana and IES Joan Ramis i Ramis all in Maó; CEIP Francesc d’Albranca in Es Migjorn; CEIP Mare de Déu del Toro in Es Mercadal, CC Sant Francesc de Sales in Ciutadella and IES Biel Martí in Ferreries. CEIP Margalida Florit and CEIP Pere Casasnovas in Ciutadella participated in the course, but couldn’t start implementing it because of the lack of volunteers on the west side of the island.
