Offers of unwanted knitting yarns, fabrics and other useful items are still needed. Some of you may have bought one of our small fancy soap gifts in the Christmas or December Clearance sale. There will be more of these at future sales, so if you have any bars of soap you could donate (unused of course) we would be grateful; especially if you have some of the small posh ones ‘collected’ from a nice hotel. Also fancy fabrics in smallish pieces (not collected from a hotel of course) ie georgette or silk scarves, net from your old wedding dress/es, any fine or decorative fabric would be gratefully accepted.
February also bought a very welcome visit from Elizabeth Kempster. Elizabeth is an accomplished needlewoman, although she is finding it a little difficult these days. She was brought to the group meeting by her son, who also brought along Kitty, who we hadn’t seen for some time, to deliver the beautiful rag rug she had made (see photo of Elizabeth with the rug). It was originally Anne Maddison’s project, but it seems she had taken on more than she could cope with due to her other Red Cross duties. It was taken over by Elizabeth after a few rows had been completed. You can see the finished result in the photograph. It is now being fabric backed by Sue Woolley, so look out for it in the Spring Sale on Saturday 11 May at the Aeroclub Mahón Menorca.
This week we gained a new Craft Group Member. Marga, originally for Mallorca, but has been living in Mahón for the last fifteen years. She teaches English in Ciutadella. She looked at the card making with Jan Cook and also mentioned that as she used to knit as a child and would like some help to start again. She seemed to enjoy her first visit and will be back next week. She is our first Spanish member and very welcome, maybe we will be able to brush up on our Spanish!
We also had a visit from Linda Cook whose daughter Libby is a very talented textile artist working mainly with recycled vintage fabrics. Libby is currently working in the Kings Road, at a shop called Anthropoligie. We are hoping she will visit us in the Summer and share her skills. Linda also brought along her computer and showed us a site called Mister Finch where there are scores of animals, birds, moths and other wildlife made completely from recycled fabrics. If you would like to look at some of his work, the address is simply www.misterfinch.com. It is well worth a visit just to appreciate the talent and work involved in making the items shown.
