Behind The Scenes with Don Hyatt, R&R Menorca

PDFprintemail

RR_Don_with_SoldiersSteve Morgan of Rest & Recover Menorca recently trekked almost half way around the island of Menorca in the middle of winter to meet with Don Hyatt, co-founder of R&R Menorca, the fundraising activity that supports British servicemen wounded in Afghanistan. Here is the ‘fearless and intrepid’ reporter’s account of his interview to find out a little bit of ‘inside information’.

We met in the lovely Hotel Jeni in Don’s home town of Es Mercadal and, once I had bribed Don with a ‘café-con-leche’, here’s what he divulged when I put the following questions to him.

Steve: We’ve heard in the past about how Rest & Recover was set up by Anne Maddison and yourself, but now you are in your third year can you give me a brief idea as to how the soldiers are chosen for the R&R Menorca visit?

Rest & Recover Menorca Soldier Returns

PDFprintemail

Jason__Family_Oct_2012Rest & Recover…Then Return! The latest news from Rest & Recover Menorca, the fundraising organisation that aims to make a small but important contribution to the rehabilitation of injured British servicemen. Steve Morgan reports:

One of the best things about my job (yes, I consider it a job because I work harder now than when I was employed by a well known financial institution…!!) is I get to meet such interesting people. So, I was particularly delighted when I learnt that one of the soldiers who came to Menorca last February with the On Course Foundation (OCF) had booked a holiday here with his wife and three daughters.

Jason Evans, his wife Lynn and daughters Megan, Rosie & Penny booked themselves a beautiful villa in Binidali for a week of Menorcan October sun. I'd met Jason briefly when he was playing at Son Parc Golf Club but this time Polly and I met the whole family for a coffee and a stroll along the port of Mahon, before three excited little girls got on the glass bottomed boat.

R & R Menorca Swim Cancelled

PDFprintemail

rest-recoverSadly, there has been no option but to cancel the proposed Rest & Recover Swim around Menorca scheduled to take place on Wednesday 26 September 2012, to coincide with the second visit to Menorca by the Red Arrows as part of the commemoration of the 300th anniversary of Richard Kane’s arrival on the island as Menorca’s first British Governor. Steve Morgan of R & R Menorca reports:

‘To a Mouse’

“...But, mousie, thou art no thy (you aren’t alone);  In proving foresight may be vain;  The best laid schemes o’ mice an men;  Gang aft a-gley (often go awry);  An’ lea’e us nought but grief an pain;  For promised joy...”

R & R Menorca Summer 2012 Update

PDFprintemail

Amy_Jo_Brenda_Sandy__AnneThroughout June and July, Rest & Recover Menorca’s enthusiastic fundraising team has been hard at work, reports Steve Morgan. Following on from the Charity Cricket Match and Sports Memorabilia Auction, R & R held its second Summer Garden Party once again at Ron and Roger’s fabulous garden in Sant Tomas on Sunday 1 July. The event, organised by Sandy Berresford and Jo Baillie and helped on the day by Ann Cartwright and 16 year old Amy Tucker, was attended by over 60 people, including film and TV actor Peter Guinness (Zorro, Silent Witness, Casualty, The Bill plus many more!) and his actress wife Roberta Taylor (The Bill, Holby City & Eastenders). With sandwiches provided by Master Chef Adrian Deamer and cakes by Sandy Berresford, Ann Cartwright, Jo Baillie, Mary Simpson and Dolly Martin (who from now on will be known as Cakes R Us!), the organisers and their helpers did a grand job keeping everybody topped up with tea and cake.
