At last, the summer season has started, the warmer weather is here and everything is open. Now all Menorca can do is wait expectantly to see what the next few months bring as the tourists start to arrive. They won’t be disappointed, the island is certainly looking its best with its lush green countryside, magnificent sandy beaches and crystal clear blue seas.
There is also a lot going on too. Not only is it the 200th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution of 1812, it is also the 300th anniversary of the arrival of Menorca's first British Governor Richard Kane and, of course, the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. Celebratory plans are well underway, uniting both the Menorcan and British communities, which are sure to be as much fun for holiday makers as for Menorca’s own residents. Full details will be available in our What’s On section.
This month we bring you a variety of news, not all positive as Menorca also falls victim to global recession and we have a worrying report about plans that could affect the island’s status as a biosphere reserve. But, on a more cheerful note, you can read about the latest night spots and how to eat and drink your way around Maó. And, just because they are so pretty, we thought we’d share Menorca’s abundance of wild flowers with those of you who are not fortunate enough to see them.
Don’t forgot to check out our What’s On section as well as the Menorca-Live Restaurant & Bar Guide for up to date news on where to go and what to eat.
Once again, RTG images has kindly supplied this month’s gorgeous banner image of Cala Galdana. To see more of RTG Images’ stunning photographs, visit: www.rtgimages.com.

Spring has arrived and despite rather mixed weather at the moment, the warmer days are definitely on their way as Menorca wakes up from winter and prepares for the summer ahead. This has come early for some bars and restaurants who opened their doors for the first time this year for the Easter holiday weekend. Many will now remain open until the official start of the tourist season on 1 May (Labour Day), even if just at the weekends, and with some excellent promotions to entice people in.
While the current financial crisis is very much on everyone’s minds, especially those who rely on tourism for their livelihood, there is a greater feeling of optimism for the months ahead compared with last year. Take the resorts around Arenal d’en Castell for example, investment is being put into the area and new places are opening including a new Aqua Park – read our report to find out more.
In fact, this month’s newsletter is all about ‘news’….Island News, Travel News, Charity News and news about events happening on the Isla Del Rey this summer. For those perhaps looking to move to Menorca, buy a second home or perhaps start a business over here, we have some very sound advice from accountancy experts Ernesto Quintana Associats and currency experts Foreign Currency Direct.
And just to remind you how beautiful Menorca is, this month’s lovely banner photograph, taken at Son Saura, has again been kindly supplied by RTG Images. Hope you enjoy this update on life in Menorca.

Editor's Comment March 2012
With temperatures nudging 17 degrees as I write this, it’s hard to believe it was snowing this time last month as the air temperature fell below freezing. Menorca is once again bathed in sunshine, people are out and about and the spring colours look all the more vibrant after the unusually dull skies. Just take a look at the beautiful banner photograph, supplied this month by RTG Images, much more befitting of a Mediterranean holiday island. To see more of RTG Images stunning photographs, visit: www.rtgimages.com.
So, February turned out to be a very quiet month indeed as Menorca went into hibernation, but now March is here there is definitely a feeling of reawakening as a period of renovation and decoration gets under way before the holiday season starts. Easter is less than a month away, but whether this will attract early visitors and what the tourism industry really holds for Menorca in 2012 is anyone’s guess.
For our part, we are working hard on exciting new initiatives at Menorca-Live which we will be introduced over the coming weeks to bring you an even better service and insight into island life. In the meantime, newsletter highlights this month include that favourite British topic – the weather, details about the exciting Fiesta del Mar programme of sports and leisure activities in May, information about Menorca Photography Tours and trip to the natural beauty spot of Sa Bassa Verda as well as news from the Red Cross Craft Group and Menorca Britiannia.
Hope you enjoy this brief snapshot of life in Menorca.

Editor’s Comment February
No, it's not a mistake, this is Menorca...! Having enjoyed relatively mild weather throughout January with a good deal of sunshine, sometimes it’s easy to forget what ‘real’ winter weather is all about. Well, February’s arrival changed all that, and the reminder came as a shock to the system with exceptionally bitter winds and unusually dull, dreary days followed by snow at the weekend…! This beautiful wintery woodland scene was provided courtesy of George Spooner. To see more of George’s imaginative work, visit: www.cargocollective.com/georgespooner.
The good news is that it won’t last for long, and spring is around the corner. Apart from Carnival week, February in Menorca is traditionally a very quiet month when many people take a break and recharge the batteries before the onset of the summer holiday season. Indications are that the new government is planning new initiatives to help support extending the tourist season, so there is an air of optimism, and Menorca really does have a lot going for it as a great holiday destination with lots to do for all ages.

Where has 2011 gone…? I can’t believe a year has passed since we sent out our first newsletter, and looking back the months have simply flown by. No sooner were we getting over a chilly winter, then spring was upon us followed by the frenetic months of summer as businesses tried to make hay while the sun shone, almost literally. The wonderfully mild and sunny autumn well into November gave a false sense of security that Christmas must be weeks away, but here it is suddenly upon us…!
So, if you need any last minute presents for Christmas and Reyes or something to brighten up your New Year’s Eve outfit, there’s a new shop opening this week in Calle del Angel in the centre of Maó called ‘Bangels’. Promising to offer all sorts of stylish fashion accessories for every occasion, be sure to check it out when you are next in town.
