Concerts and Shows in Menorca for July

habana-con-kolaThis month sees Menorca play host to some great artistic talent from classical concerts to contemporary dance performances taking place in some fantastic settings such as the historic Teatre Principal in Maó, the cloister gardens in Ciutadella and other open air venues. The 39th Music Festival of Ciutadella de Menorca, organised by Juventuts Musicals de Ciutadella, also starts on 9 July and runs throughout July and August, details of this month’s performances included below.

Saturday 9 July

21.30 hrs: Concert with Claudi Arimany (flute) and Musici di Vivaldi Chamber Octet at the Claustre de Seminari, Ciutadella. Part of the Music Festival of Ciutadella. For further information, visit: www.jjmmciutadella.com.

21.30 hrs: Concert of religious music presented by the Maó Ateneo’s Philharmonic Group’s female choir in the Sant Lluis church, with soloists Maria Camps and Victoria Riera; string quartet (Carme Cardona, Esther Pons Barro, Marga Gual and Pau Cardona) and pianist / conductor Lola Mir.

Tuesday 12 July

21.30 hrs: Cuban music performed by singing due Habana con Kola and their band in the Plaça des Pins, Ciutadella.

21.30 hrs: Concert by the Suso Gonzalez Trio at the Teatre Principal, Maó.

Wednesday 13 July

21.30 hrs: Concert by Flamenco singing group, Azul y Nacar, in the Plaça des Pins, Ciutadella.

Thursday 14 July

21.30 hrs: ‘The five piano concert’ – a tribute to Liszt with Vivianna Sofronitsky and Paul McNulty at the Teatre Principal, Maó. 

21.30 hrs; Concert by the Familia Rustika in the Claustre del Carme, Maó.

Saturday 16 July

21.30 hrs: Folk Festival presented by Sant Isidre in the Plaça des Pins, Ciutadella.String_Quartet

Monday 18 July

21.30 hrs: Concert with Peter Soave & Rucner String Quartet at the Claustre del Seminari, Ciutadella. Part of the Music Festival of Ciutadella. For further information, visit: www.jjmmciutadella.com.

Tuesday 19 July

22.00 hrs: Inauguration of the Ciutadella Mediterranean Cinema Festival in the Plaça del Catedral with a screening of Donald Crisp’s ‘El Navegante’ and live jazz quartet.

Wednesday 20 July

21.30 hrs; Concert: ‘Berlin Counterpoint’, a wind and piano sextet with Sasha Rattle on clarinet, at the Teatre Principal, Maó.     

Thursday 21 July

Concert by Albert Pla in the Claustre del Carme, Maó.

Monday 25 July

21.30 hrs: Concert by the Albor Quartet at the Claustre del Seminari, Ciutadella. Part of the Music Festival of Ciutadella. For further information, visit: www.jjmmciutadella.com.

Wednesday 27 July

21.30 hrs: Performance by the London Community Gospel Choir singing a range of contemporary music from Paul McCartney to Celine Dion at the Teatre Principal, Maó.  

Thursday 28 July

21.30 hrs: Alaior Song Festival, dedicated to the 80s at Los Pinos Municipal Sports Ground, Alaior.

21.30 hrs: Concert by Catalan band La Troup, playing contemporary Latin American style music with a twist of rock and reggae, in the Claustre del Carme, Maó.

21.30 hrs: Avant-guard ballet, ‘Payasos Divinos’ (Clowns Devine) a performance of three acts by the contemporary dance company LaMov, in the Sala Multifuncional, Es Mercadal. Avant-guard

Friday 29 July

LaMov_Cinderella21.00 hrs: Grand concert ‘Una Noche de Elixir’ at the Sant Lluis Municipal Football Ground, featuring Simon Orfila, Mariola Cantero, Celso Albelo and Roberto de Candio.

21.00 hrs: A modern take on the classical ballet ‘Cenicienta’ (Cinderella) by LaMov at the Teatre Principal, Maó.

Saturday 30 July

21.00 hrs: A series of innovative dances by two choreographers that portray conflicting emotions from anger to hope, performed by the LaMov ballet company at the Teatre Principal, Maó.

Maó Music Nights

21.00 hrs onwards: Every Tuesday from 5 July until 23 August, there will be live music from a variety of groups and bands playing on the terraces of various bars and restaurants in the town. A total of 30 musical groups and 16 bars are taking part in the programme.

Organ Recitals

Maó: In the Santa Maria Church, daily except Sunday at 13.00 hrs.

Ciutadella: In the Socors Church on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 11.00 hrs.

Alaior: In the Santa Eulalia Church on Wednesdays to Saturday at 11.30 hrs.

Jazz Club

21.30 hrs: Jam session every Tuesday in the Casino, Sant Climent.

Son Martorellet Equestrian Show

20.30 hrs: Every Tuesday and Thursday there will be performance of the spectacular ‘Sonmi 2011’ show at Son Martorellet on the road to Cala Galdana.
