International Dialling Codes

Remember for calls to the UK dial: 00 44 and then drop the 0 before the STD code. When calling numbers in Menorca from a UK mobile, ensure you include the international code 00 34 before dialling the number. When texting a UK mobile from another UK mobile, there is no need to add the international code regardless of where the recipient is. But, this can be quite expensive dependent on the tariff you are on.

Public Telephones

There are public phone boxes located all over the island that take all coins as well as phone cards. For local calls, a minimum of 20 cents will be needed. Many public establishments also have phones (small red or green boxes) for public use which are metered and charged per unit. Certain telephone booths operate in the resorts during the holiday season where calls are connected and charged by the operator.

To telephone abroad first dial 00 then the country code, eg 44 for the UK, followed by the regional code leaving out the first 0, eg: for 01789 – just dial 1789, then dial the telephone number you require. Don’t be frightened of the public phones, they will most likely work out cheaper than calling from a UK mobile and you can keep a check of how much you spend.

Chemists

Called ‘Farmacias’ and identified by a green cross outside, most chemists are not open at weekends but will have a rota located on the doorway as there will always be one on duty in each town. During the main tourist season each resort will have its own medical centre and chemist that have longer opening hours.

Anglican Church

The Anglian Church in Menorca is the Santa Margarita in Es Castell, c/Stuart, 20. The following services are held each week, visitors welcome:

Banks

Normal opening hours are Monday to Saturday 08.30 to 14.00 but during the summer months they are closed on Saturdays. La Caixa exchange bureaux open on Thursday afternoons from October to April, 16.30 to 19.30.
As well as at banks, there are ATMs just about everywhere on the Island. Many banks have special exchange facilities in the resorts. Euro cheques and credit cars are widely accepted throughout the Island.

Shops

Usually open Monday to Friday from 09.30 to 13.30 and then 17.30 to 20.30 in the evenings with a half day on Saturday and closed on Sunday. Some shops may remain open all day and later in the evenings during the high season.
Supermarkets
Usual opening hours are Monday to Saturday 09.00 to 21.00 and some are open on Sunday mornings. If paying by credit card some supermarkets will ask to look at your passport or driving licence – this also applies in some shops – so don’t get caught out!

Markets

Mahon and Ciutadella have wonderful daily food markets in the town centres. Ferrerias has a special open air market on Saturday mornings. Street markets selling clothes and crafts are held on regular days in the following towns:
Mahon: Tuesdays and Saturdays
Ciutadella: Fridays and Saturdays
Alayor: Thursdays
Es Castell: Mondays and Wednesdays
Es Migjorn Gran: Wednesdays
Ferrerias: Fridays
Fornells: Thursdays (June to September)
Mercadal: Sundays
San Lluis: Mondays

Tipping

Between 5-10% is usual for good service in restaurants. It is customary to leave a few coins in bars and cafes.

Petrol Stations

There are 14 petrol stations on the Island, 3 in Mahon, 3 in Ciutadella, 1 on the San Lluis road, 1 in San Lluis, 1 in Mercadal, 1 in Ferrerias, 1 on the Fornells road and a double station between Alayor and Mahon. All should be marked on a tourist map. If you are unfamiliar with Menorca, it is always advisable not to let the fuel gauge creek too low!
Petrol stations are self-service and payment made in the forecourt office once you have filled up, unless you are using a pre-payment pump. When fiestas are on in a particular town, the petrol station nearby may close, so be prepared.

For boats there are filling stations on Mahon Port, Ciutadella and Cala'n Bosch.

Letters and postcards take approximately a week to reach the UK. Stamps can be bought in post offices, tobacconists and some souvenir shops. Postcards and letters up to 20g cost 64 cents to European destinations and 34 cents within Spain.
