Our President, Jill, remarked on the unusual fact that there were no birthday cards to hand out this month – we must have a gap in the star signs on our membership list! The raffle prizes for September reflected a ‘home’ theme with possibly the world’s jazziest coloured spotted broom as one of the items on display. Jan had obviously been making a clean sweep of the shops..!
Following lunch, the raffle and our usual coffee break, Jill introduced our guest speaker, David Riley. David’s talk was intriguingly entitled ‘Travelling in Ladies Underwear’ and we were hugely entertained by his memories of his adventures as a junior salesman, which amongst other incidents involved an exploding suitcase full of corsets and a request from the boss to collect some very fresh fertilizer for his garden..!
However, David not only survived his experiences but also met a ‘leggy, titian-haired young lady’ who started work in the office. The young lady became his wife, Karen, and they have now been together for 45 years, so clearly a career in sales has its advantages..! Thank you, David, for sharing your time and good humour, not to mention opening our eyes to some of the perils to be found in the garment industry..!
Ladies Probus Club lunches are held on the second Thursday of each month. Our lunch on Thursday, 10 October 2013 will be held at the Taj Indian Restaurant in Port d’Addaia when our guest speaker will be Deborah Hellyer. For bookings please phone 616 390 801 by 8 October latest.
