The Spanish Ministry of Health owns the buildings on the island which are used as holiday accommodation for members of the Health Service and to hold scientific or health conventions. There was a move to convert the buildings into a ‘parador’ but this failed to materialise due to the Ministry of Health being unwilling to part with the property.
Although the agreement states that Lazareto will be open for public visits from 15 May until 15 October 2011, it will probably be mid July before the island is ready to receive its first callers on guided visits that will be arranged by the Fundació Destí (the Menorcan Tourist Board). There will also be an opening for social and cultural events to be held at the location.
