The past few months have seen a lot of changes at Menorca’s longstanding and much loved charity theatre club, the Menorca Charity Players (MCP). Our new President, Phil Bryan, has instilled a very welcome ‘breath of fresh air’ attitude into the club, making all the members feel very positive about the future and we are already enjoying our new activities. MCP member Chris Coleman reports on the latest news:
First and foremost, our Christmas Show this year is called a Christmas Selection Box and has some fantastic sketches and songs, all designed to make sure that everyone has a great time around Christmas. We are organising it on the same lines as our last play reading, by offering a’ Tapa Theatre Evening’, to include food and the show, all for the really attractive price of €15 per head. This will ensure that we fill both evenings on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December at The Casino in San Clemente.
In fact, we have already performed two shows this year, one an evening of two One Act plays with dinner, and the second a play reading of an Alan Ayckbourn play. Both events were extremely well attended, enabling us to raise over €1,500 for local charities.
Of particular note, we have recently been asked to ‘contribute’ to the English language directive which is being imposed by the PP, by assisting local teachers to start teaching in English. Apparently teachers are being encouraged to conform with the directive, which involves teaching some subjects in both Castellano and English, as well as the current arrangement of lessons being held in Catalan. We will be performing a play reading to over 30 teachers involved with the project at a venue where they will be spending a weekend solely for the purpose of speaking and living in English. The objective is to help them with pronunciation and intonation, and we will be performing one of our trilogy of One Act Plays by David Tristram, which were extremely well received by our audiences.
We are also producing a video to promote a performance that we have been asked to organise as part of an April Fools Day ‘English Event’ where over 200 children will spend the day in Es Mercadal doing English activities, part of which will be a Pantomime in English. Although not yet agreed, it is likely that this show will become our spring production.
We are very proud to have been asked to get involved with the local community and we are looking forward to our contribution. As you can see, we are all so enjoying our new lease of life in the club and we have many new people contemplating joining us, some of which have skills that we are keen to embrace.
Finally, it is likely that we will be organising another play reading at the Way Restaurant on Mahon harbour, sometime in January. For more information about this event, please drop us a line to our email address or, alternatively, you can simply email us and we will ensure that you are kept informed about forthcoming events: firstname.lastname@example.org.
We very much hope to see you at the Casino Restaurant, San Clemente on December 6 or 7, where we can all enjoy an early Christmas celebration and where your attendance will ensure that some of those less fortunate than ourselves will also be able to have a good Christmas…A very Merry Christmas to you all from all at Menorca Charity Players.
