Astra 2E will be put into service and tested during July and channels will gradually change over to the new satellite after that. It is still uncertain as yet how this will affect SKY’s own channels. There is another new satellite, Astra 2G, being launched in May 2014 and it is anticipated that SKY will move to this new satellite in due course.
These three new satellites will have a much tighter beam over the UK and therefore a weaker signal is being and will be received here in Menorca.
There is no doubt that this is going to be an inconvenient, not to mention expensive, time for those people who wish to continue enjoying British television. There are various options to consider, dependent on your location, budget and how much TV viewing is required. Here’s a quick break down, together with outline costs, to give you a basic idea of what’s available, but please do get in contact with us to discuss your particular situation in more detail, details below.
Invest in a premium quality dish. For the best reception and to receive all channels as before, either a 1.8m or, preferably, a 2.4m fibreglass Channel Master dish are recommended The main problem with the smaller 1.8m dish is that it is likely to be affected during bad weather, resulting in a loss of signal. Both dishes will have to be mounted on a concrete base.
Approx cost of dishes: 2.4m upgrade, cost €3,999 not including the base. 1.8m upgrade, cost €1,605.00, again not including the base.
Cheaper aluminium dish option. Tests have been carried out on the 2.3m model, but this aluminium dish is inferior both in terms of the dish quality itself and the reception received, and as yet this dish has not been tested in bad weather. However, it will cost less than a Channel Master 2.4m dish.
Approx cost of dish: 2.3m Aluminium Famavel dish upgrade, cost €2,900.00, not including the concrete base
IPTV box through the internet. This will enable you to receive all the popular Freesat channels, currently 27 TV and 13 radio programmes. It also gives you a 14-day catch up TV service. However, this must be with an ADSL internet connection of more than 2mbps and not other limited download services such as a 3G mobile connection or Tooway satellite internet, as used by many people for their internet. A new non-ADSL service called IBRED can be supplied, and we are currently testing this for suitability.
Approx cost: Box €169, installation €50, monthly subscription €22.95 (one month subscription free if paid annually)
Pirate satellite codes. Your existing dish can be realigned to receive scrambled satellite signals for BBC, ITV1 and Channel 4 from another satellite, using pirate codes to unlock them and using a different new receiver. This option is not recommended for a worry free, uninterrupted service as the codes can change at any time and new codes will need to be obtained, which take an undeterminable time to receive.
Approx cost: €250 depending on dish positioning
Non-sky satellite option: Make do with the worldwide English speaking TV channels available to everyone, which concentrate mainly on news and currently affairs. These require a non-sky satellite receiver and the existing dish being realigned to another satellite. This is perhaps a solution for rented properties.
Approx cost: €250
