This Month’s Highlights
This weekend (Friday 17 to Sunday 19 May) sees Mahón burst into bloom as the town celebrates its sixth flower festival, Maó + Flors, when buildings and shop fronts are transformed with fantastic floral displays, music fills the streets, bakeries sell cakes decorated with flowers and all sorts of other fun activities take place. And this year promises to be no exception with live music performances, the Maó Giants, a dog show, painting and photography exhibitions, children’s entertainment and readings of well-known stories and legends for everyone to enjoy. Fingers crossed that the sun comes out and the rain stays away..!
Over the past few weeks, florists and garden centres all around the island have been preparing wonderful floral arrangements to decorate the squares and public buildings, each having been allocated their own particular area. Children in the local schools have also been making murals and montages to decorate the streets.
The first Jornadas Gastronómicas (Gastronomic Days) 2013 takes place this weekend in Es Castell on Saturday 4 and Sunday 5 May. A total of 24 restaurants, bars, cafés and hotels are participating and each will be preparing its own special menu based around traditional Menorcan cuisine for you to enjoy.
With a choice of 20 venues located along the pretty harbour of Calas Fonts and Moll d’en Pons and four in the town itself, all offering a varied, well priced menu at between €12 and €25, there will be plenty of opportunity to discover new places and sample new dishes during the two-day event.
It’s tapas weekend once again in Es Castell, Menorca on Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 April 2013. This regular promotion has become increasingly popular as residents and visitors to Es Castell take to the streets to sample some authentic Menorcan tapas, discover new venues and meet up with friends along the way.
What better way to enjoy the warmer spring weather than wandering along the Ruta de Tapas which this time has attracted 17 local bars and restaurants to serve a drink and a delicious little snack prepared especially for the occasion at just €2.
The restaurants and the tapas they are serving are listed below during the two day event. Please note, Can Los is closed on Sunday and Granja Es Castell is closed Sunday evening.
The sights and sounds of Seville come to the Plaça Esplanada, Es Castell this weekend for the VIII Feria de Abril de Menorca or April Fair on 5, 6 and 7 April 2013 in celebration of Andalucian music and dance. During the three day event, a variety of traditional and contemporary live acts will take place in the square, including some amazing equestrian displays from local riding clubs.
Held in Ciutadella for the last seven years, this year the Fair is being organised by the Casa de Andalucía of Mahón, in association with former organisers, La Asociación de Danza Española y Flamenco de Ciudadela (ASODEFC). The original Feria de Abril has been held in Seville on either the first or second weekend after Easter since 1847, when the streets become alive with the sounds and colours of Flemenco guitars, castanets and traditional costumes.
